When Texas Freezes

The February 2021 freeze showed how many Texas pipes are exposed.

FEBRUARY 2021 · WINTER STORM URIWhen Texas froze

Days of sub-freezing temperatures burst pipes in attics, exterior walls and garages across the state, including Texas. Many Texas homes run water lines where they were never meant to freeze.

Before a hard freeze

  1. Know where your main shut-off is and make sure it turns.
  2. Wrap pipes in the attic, garage and exterior walls; cover outdoor faucets.
  3. Open cabinet doors under sinks on outside walls.
  4. Keep heat on if you travel.
  5. If a pipe bursts: shut off the main, cut power to wet areas from a dry spot, then call.

Freeze prep: ready.gov/winter-weather. General guidance, not a guarantee against damage.

Flash Flood Alley Safety

Central Texas creeks rise quickly after heavy rain.

Never drive into a flooded crossing

Central Texas is known as Flash Flood Alley. Creeks can rise in minutes and low-water crossings flood first.

  • Turn around at any water over the road. You can’t see the depth or whether the road is gone.
  • A foot of moving water can float a car (NWS).
  • Stay out of flooded rooms too: floodwater is Category 3 and can hide live wiring.

01Is my Texas ZIP code covered?

DryRoute covers 1,012 residential ZIP codes in Texas. Coverage is set ZIP by ZIP, so neighborhoods in the same city can differ. Check yours with the ZIP checker above, or call and you will be told on the call.

02My town is not listed. Can I still call?

Yes. City pages cover the places with the most covered ZIP codes, but coverage is set by ZIP across Texas. If your ZIP is covered, your call is routed to a local team that serves it.

03Does homeowners insurance cover flooding in Texas?

Usually not. Rising floodwater needs a separate flood policy through the NFIP or a private insurer, and new NFIP policies usually take 30 days to start. Sudden leaks like burst pipes are usually covered by homeowners policies. Check your own policy.

04What happened to Texas pipes in February 2021?

Winter Storm Uri brought days of sub-freezing temperatures across Texas. Pipes in attics, exterior walls and garages burst in many homes at once. Insulating exposed pipes and knowing where your main shut-off is are the two best protections.

05Who will come to my home?

A local water damage restoration team that serves your ZIP code. They inspect the damage, explain the work and price before starting, and carry it out. Calling DryRoute costs nothing.
